Estate Administration Without a Will — Penang Property and EPF
The Situation
A Penang family contacted us after their father passed away intestate (without a will). The estate included a terrace house in Bukit Mertajam, EPF savings, and two bank accounts. Three adult children were involved, and no one knew how to begin the legal process.
What We Did
We applied for Letters of Administration through the Penang High Court, collected and filed all necessary documents, liaised with EPF, the relevant banks, and the land office, and prepared a full estate account showing how assets should be distributed under the Distribution Act 1958.
The Outcome
Letters of Administration were granted after approximately five months. The estate was fully administered and distributed within eight months of the initial engagement. All three children received their legal entitlements, and the property was successfully transferred.

Disputed Will — Beneficiary Challenge in George Town
The Situation
An adult child who had been largely excluded from their parent's will contacted us. They believed the will had been signed under undue influence from another sibling who had moved in with the parent in their final years. The estate involved a shophouse in George Town valued at approximately RM 900,000.
What We Did
We reviewed the will, the circumstances of its execution, and the available medical records. We wrote to the other party's solicitors setting out the concerns and requesting a negotiated settlement. When initial correspondence did not resolve the matter, formal mediation was arranged.
The Outcome
The matter was resolved at mediation without proceeding to trial. Our client received a revised settlement that reflected a fair share of the estate. The process took approximately seven months from first instruction to settlement agreement.

Estate Planning — Multi-Asset Family Situation, Penang
The Situation
A retired couple in their late sixties came to us after the husband was diagnosed with a serious illness. They owned a house in Pulau Tikus, had EPF savings, unit trust investments, and a life insurance policy. They had made no formal estate planning arrangements.
What We Did
We held a full estate planning consultation, reviewing all their assets and explaining what a will could and could not cover. We drafted wills for both spouses, advised on EPF nomination implications, and recommended they review their insurance policy nominations. We also helped them choose appropriate executors.
The Outcome
Both wills were executed within three weeks of the initial consultation. The couple left knowing their wishes were clearly recorded and that administration of their estates, when that time came, would be straightforward for their children.
